About Moreau Montessori
Moreau Montessori School provides an enriched, stimulating environment within which the child is an active explorer and learner. We provide a warm and accepting environment in which each child feels secure, respected and loved.
Moreau Montessori School is owned and operated by the Jefferson City Montessori Society (JCMS). JCMS is a private, non-profit, non-discriminatory educational organization composed of families, friends and community supporters. JCMS and the Moreau Montessori School do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, age, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, marital status, veteran status, political affiliation, or disability in matters affecting employment or in providing access to programs to employees or students.
The mission of JCMS is to provide a Montessori educational alternative for children in the Jefferson City area and educate children using the Montessori principles and philosophy. The organization provides all necessary materials and resources that promote Montessori education. These include nationally certified teachers, equipping the school, adult orientations, and educational events as well as the promotion of research in education.
Moreau Montessori School, founded in Jefferson City, Missouri over 40 years ago, provides Montessori education for children from toddler through elementary school age during the school year, as well through summer enrichment programs. The school is quite different from day care or ordinary child care. The program offers a curriculum designed to nurture the physical, social, cognitive and emotional development of each student, based on the Montessori Method developed by Dr. Maria Montessori. Children receive individualized education by accredited teachers.
The JCMS was first organized in 1972 by a group of parents concerned with quality education for their preschool children. Beginning in 1975, the school was located at 1212 East High Street in a church building donated to the Society. In 1985, the school moved to 524 Schumate Chapel Road, a ranch style home in Jefferson City.
Finally, in July 2000, the school moved to the “Old Moreau Heights School Building” at 900 Moreau Drive. Moreau Montessori School expanded into three classrooms. The move was made to allow for expansion to meet the needs of a community with growing interest in the Montessori philosophy. Improvements made in this facility represent the support and participation of Society parents.
The historic Moreau Heights School building offers an ideal environment for young children to learn and grow. Child-sized fixtures and spacious, bright classrooms with large windows and high ceilings set the stage for exploration. Mixed age groups and team teaching enhance the community atmosphere for our children. A large, fenced outdoor play environment and walks through the historic residential neighborhood where the school is located stimulate the senses and foster an appreciation for the natural world.
